Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was raised by her grandmother and she was a sole child. Scott attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. She completed her secondary education there while working two jobs. The hope was to become an English High School teacher. After three years of being teacher's assistant and studying the possibility to become a high school English teacher came to a halt. She began her career by doing live performances of poems as well as writing her own material. Then she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. The singer performed at a Roots performance. After that, she was able to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to experience the arts of performing during the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
